Lenovo has attracted the attention of the gaming industry in 2021 with Legion 5 Pro and Legion 7. We tested the Legion 5 Pro and were impressed with its capabilities as a hardcore gaming laptop. Therefore, for Lenovo Legion 7, considering its largest spec sheet and dazzling price tag, our expectations will only be higher. do you know? It fascinates me.
Compared with Dell Alienware m15, HP Omen 16, ASUS ROG Strix and other high-end gaming laptops, Legion 7 costs Rs 2,39,990. Lenovo did not use Intel’s 11th-generation chips, but instead used the powerful AMD Ryzen 9 5900H, which is not inferior in any way. Paired with the rest of the package, this looks like the perfect package for gamers and creators. But is it?
In order to find out, I conducted my daily work and games based on Lenovo Legion 7 evaluation samples for two weeks. Read on to find out if this is still the gaming laptop you should buy if your budget allows it.
In the past few years, Lenovo has not changed the basic design and structure of Legion laptops. It has good and bad: in a sense, it's a sturdy and practical design, only for gamers; bad in a way it looks old. Even with fancy RGB lighting around the edges and slim bezels, Legion 7 does not look as exciting as the Alienware m15 or ROG Strix Scar. Worryingly, those who own Legion 5i have the same design as your more expensive Legion 7. I think Lenovo should bring changes to the design and appearance of the entire Legion lineup.
Nevertheless, Legion 7 is a rugged and durable gaming laptop. Simple and low-key cover design, neatly laid out keyboard panel, lit by a beautiful RGB light show, and cleverly arranged I/O ports-I can see the human body of content creators and gamers on this machine Engineering is satisfied. I am a fan of the muscular vents that decorate the sides and the light from them. It weighs 2.4 kg, but considering what it contains, I have no complaints here.
Since we were exposed to ports, here is a list of all the ports you get with this laptop. There is one USB Type-C (USB 3.28 Gen 2, DisplayPort 1.4), another USB Type-C (USB 3.28 Gen 1), 3 x USB Type-A 3.28 Gen 1 (1 x Always-On 5V), 1 x USB Type-C (USB 3.28 Gen 2, DisplayPort 1.4, Power Delivery), 1 x HDMI 2.1, 1 x RJ45 Ethernet, headphone jack and proprietary charging port. The webcam also has a physical shutter button.
Legion 7 is equipped with a 16-inch IPS display with a pixel resolution of 2560 x 1600. In layman's English, this means that it is a large display that looks very clear, especially when playing games. Considering that most games are still built for a 16:9 aspect ratio, the unique 16:10 aspect ratio is a bit unusual in games. However, once you adjust the settings accordingly, the extra space will definitely help the sense of immersion.
Used in conjunction with 165Hz refresh rate and NVIDIA's G-Sync, it can provide a very smooth and seamless viewing experience. The narrow bezels help reduce distractions, and the vivid color reproduction makes the game look amazing; Forza Horizon 5 and Battlefield 2042 look great, although not as good as the Dell XPS 17.
A top laptop like Legion 7 is bound to provide the best gaming experience you can get from a laptop. The devices I can use are Ryzen 9 5900H processor, 165W TDP NVIDIA RTX 3080 GPU, 16GB VRAM, 32GB dual-channel DDR4 RAM and 1TB NVMe SSD storage. Although it started with Windows 10, my device prompted me to download Windows 11 now. Neat.
With such a crazy level of hardware, Legion 7 swallowed everything I threw to it. Whether it was Forza Horizon 5 or Battlefield 2042, Legion 7 remained calm and continued to perform as expected. I was able to play Forza Horizon 5 with QHD+ resolution on Ultra settings, with an average frame rate of 50-60 fps and 3 hours on weekends. The fan speed of the laptop was crazy to keep it cool, but I didn't see a drop in frame rate or unusual stuttering.
A problematic and unoptimized Battlefield 2042 also ran at the maximum setting of QHD+ resolution, although I occasionally saw dropped frames in busy areas. Codemaster's F1 2021 runs Ultra settings, enables ray tracing to High, and easily returns to 50-60 fps. Decreasing the resolution to 1080p will increase the frame rate.
Lenovo's vantage software helps keep an eye on heat and provides fine control over fan speed and overall performance output. The app even allows you to enable fast charging and automatic startup when you open the lid.
When not playing games, Legion 7 has more power than usual. Windows 11 is a breeze on Legion 7, with smooth animations and fast loading times. In the busiest days when Google Chrome had to deal with 11-12 tabs, Photoshop running in the background, and Steam downloading the Forza Horizon 5 update, Legion 7 showed no signs of struggling. With such a powerful firepower, you can't expect less.
As a portable desktop, Legion 7 works well. Lenovo makes some of the best laptop keyboards, and keyboard typing on Legion 7 is comfortable. The keys have enough travel and enough feedback and spacing. When playing games, the layout seems very comfortable, especially with the arrow keys protruding outside the usual range of the keyboard. The trackpad is good, but I prefer a larger trackpad.
I hope Legion 7 has some good speakers for thick gaming laptops. The ones now are great; they are loud and have some good midrange performance. However, they lack any type of bass and detail. For better results, you need to have an external speaker or a pair of gaming headsets. The microphone system is impressive, and it did not disappoint during the online meeting.
With a battery life of 80Whr, Lenovo claims that it provides strong endurance in consideration of internal power consumption specifications. When using battery power, I was able to complete office work and had to plug in the charger after 3-3.5 hours. At that time, Windows 11 issued an alert that the battery level was less than 10%. A battery-powered game can last up to an hour, but performance will be affected. Lenovo bundled a 300W ultra-thin charger in the box, which can charge the battery for 1.5 hours with fast charging turned on. It also supports USB-PD charging, which makes me feel comfortable when I bring work to bed on cold days.
Lenovo Legion 7 can be played anyway. For just Rs 24 lakh, you can get a lot of power here. If you want a machine to play the latest AAA games at the highest settings without affecting the resolution and frame rate, that would be great. Combined with a practical ergonomic design and a good keyboard, Legion 7 can also be used as an excellent desktop replacement for advanced users. The RGB light show really enlivened the atmosphere.
In other words, Legion 7 can be done with better speakers. And, since you paid a lot of money, it is not shameful to ask for a unique design that can stand out from another cheaper Lenovo Legion variant that costs less than Rs 70,000. In contrast, Alienware or HP Omen machines of the same price look ungodly, and Legion 7 looks pale and weak.
